If you're looking for higher-level Adobe Captivate training, this advanced class is for you.

Learn how to improve your screen recording productivity via project templates and pre-editing your text captions. Enhance your production speed by learning about object styles, master slides, themes, and project templates. Create, insert, and edit variables that will enrich the learner experience.

Learn how to create branching scenarios that will enable learners to plot their own learning path through your course. Ensure your eLearning and mLearning output can be accessed by people with disabilities by adding such 508-compliant features as accessibility text and closed captions. Engage your learners at the highest level by adding widgets, interactions, drag and drop features, control object swapping, and create and edit advanced actions.

Learn about SCORM, AICC, SCOs, Manifests, the SCORM Cloud, and how to upload published lessons into a Learning Management System.

Here is what is covered in this live, two-day course:

  • Pre-editing Text Captions
  • Custom Styles, Branching and Aggregating
  • Accessible eLearning
  • Variables
  • Interactions and Widgets
  • Virtual Reality Projects and Interactive Videos
  • Master Slides, Themes and Project Templates

This class is fully interactive and hands-on, as you will be able to speak with and hear from the instructor and other students as you work in real time to complete activities within the software. While not a requirement, some students find it helpful to attend this class using two computer monitors. This will allow for one screen to always display the instructor's screen, and the other for you to use as you follow along with the instructor.

For further content information, please see the Content tab above.

Note: The current version of Captivate that we offer for our public classes is Adobe Captivate 2019. To attend this Captivate class, all you'll need to do is download the free trial version of Captivate and we will send you our version Captivate workbook. While we are no longer offering public courses for legacy versions of Adobe Captivate, you can elect for private training in any legacy version (contact us for details at 888.812.4827).

Where is this class held?

This is a live, online class led by a field expert; and just like an in-person class, it is fully interactive and engaging. The difference between an online and onsite class? No travel! You can participate from anywhere in the world with an Internet connection. Many of our students choose to stay home from work on these training days, some never even changing out of their slippers! Where applicable, students are able to speak with and hear from the instructor and other participants throughout the course as they work in real-time to complete activities.

If you are in the Philadelphia, PA area, you can check out the dates of our classes held at our classroom training center here.

During this 2-day, live, hands-on class you will learn advanced Captivate concepts including:

Essential Skills with a Twist

You'll get your advanced class started with a bit of a review. You'll record a software simulation using Captivate's Custom recording mode. Where's the twist? You'll edit a little-known language file and control the text that appears in future Captivate text captions. The time you'll save by pre-editing this little file just might pay for this class.

You Will Learn About:

  • Planning eLearning Projects
  • The Development Process
  • Resolution and Recording Size
  • Custom Recordings
  • Text Caption Pre-Editing
  • Custom Styles

Branching

If you've created several small projects, you'll learn that you can easily combine them into one master project. Once you've combined projects, you'll learn how to create jumps (branches) between different parts of the larger lesson.

You Will Learn About:

  • Custom Styles
  • Combining Projects
  • Branching
  • Slide Groups

Virtual Reality Projects and Interactive Videos

Virtual reality eLearning is all the rage. Perhaps the biggest innovation you’ll find in Adobe Captivate 2019 is the ability to easily (and we mean easily) create virtual reality projects using 360-degree photos or videos. During this section you’ll learn how you can start creating, publishing, and testing virtual reality projects in mere minutes (using supplied 360-degree photos). You’ll also learn how to take an ordinary video and make it extra-ordinary via knowledge checks and text overlays.

You Will Learn About:

  • Creating Virtual Reality Projects
  • Adding 360 photos
  • Adding Hotspots (interactivity)
  • Adding Quizzes to Virtual Reality Projects
  • Making a Video Interactive with Knowledge Checks

Accessible eLearning

Creating eLearning lessons and courses that are accessible to citizens with disabilities may be a requirement in your organization. During these lessons, you'll learn some Section 508 best practices, and how to implement them within a Captivate project.

You Will Learn About:

  • Accessibility and Captivate
  • Accessibility Text
  • Shortcut Keys
  • Closed Captioning

Variables and Widgets

Variables will allow you to customize an eLearning lesson for every student. And you don't have to know a single programming code to work with variables. You'll also learn about widgets and how to add them to a project.

You Will Learn About:

  • Inserting and Creating Both System and User-Defined Variables
  • Inserting and Working with Widgets

Interactions

Interactions, also referred to as Smart Learning Interactions, are powerful widgets that allow you to quickly insert interactive objects onto a slide. Captivate ships with a wide range of Interactions, such as Process Cycles and Pyramids, and you can download others. As you work with Interactions, you’ll find that you can customize not only the content but also the look and feel of the Interaction.

Next you’ll learn how to use Captivate’s Drag and Drop feature to engage your learners like never before. And as you do, you’ll implement states that will allow you to change the appearance of objects at will.

You Will Learn About:

  • Process Circles
  • Drag and Drop Interactions
  • Changing Object States

Advanced Actions

When a learner clicks on a button or click box, an Action occurs. But what if you want multiple, conditional actions to occur? You'll be introduced to Captivate's Advanced Actions that will allow objects to perform multiple tricks for every learner click.

You Will Learn About:

  • Standard Actions
  • Conditional Actions
  • Conditional and Standard Action Combos

Master Slides, Themes and Project Templates

Efficiency doesn't reach much higher than this... learn to keep the look and feel of your Captivate projects consistent across slides and projects when you create master slides, apply and customize Themes, and create and use Project Templates.

You Will Learn About:

  • Master Slides
  • Themes
  • Project Templates
  • Template Placeholders

Responsive eLearning

The size of the screen that learners use to access eLearning lessons can vary widely. Consider the size of a typical mobile phone compared to the various shapes and sizes of tablets, such as the Apple iPad, Microsoft Surface, and Amazon Kindle Fire. You could develop several Captivate projects that contain the same content but are sized to work on specific devices; however, the problem is that you’d have to edit and update several projects! Who wants to do that?

Additionally, who could possibly consider every screen size for every device? Even if you could build lessons for every screen size known today… what about the screen sizes for devices that have yet to be invented?

During this module, you’ll learn how to navigate Captivate’s responsive interface (which is very different than working in a standard project), and how to create responsive projects from scratch.

In This Module You Will Learn To:

  • Review a Responsive Project
  • Customize Breakpoints
  • Save a Standard Project as Responsive
  • Insert and Name Fluid Boxes
  • Add Content to Fluid Boxes
  • Switch Design Modes
  • Use the Position Inspector
  • Modify a Single Breakpoint
  • Exclude from View
  • Add a New Breakpoint
  • Position and Link Objects
  • Edit Breakpoint Object Styles

Working with an LMS

If you've included a quiz in your eLearning lesson, it's likely you'll need to track the quiz results. You'll learn how to prepare a Captivate project so that it will work with an LMS, and how to successfully upload a lesson to an LMS.

You Will Learn About:

  • LMS Reporting Options
  • Manifest Files
  • Advanced Interaction
  • Content Packages
  • SCORM Cloud
  • Uploading to an LMS

Note: The lessons outlined above comprise topics typically covered in a class of this skill level. The instructor may, at the instructor's discretion, alter the lesson plan to meet the needs of the class participants.

Great class. Well worth the time and money. Lori is excellent. TAKE NOTES! Review by Ted
LOT'S of top quality, useable content is packed into two days. Lori spends most of her time writing eCourses with Captivate. She knows the job, knows the tool and knows what you need to know - and delivers it. When you take the course:
-1- Use two monitors
-2- Use a good headset and microphone
-3- Stay home. You need to be able to give 100% attention to the course.

This class was really good! Review by Diane
The way this class is designed really helped me "practice" what we were learning, as I was able to apply the concepts immediately and with the instructor able to see my work and provide feedback. This was the best Captivate class I have ever taken! Thanks Kevin and Lori, you were wonderful! (Posted on 11/25/2014)
