Excel Formulas and Functions Fundamentals

Understanding how to do formulas and functions correctly in Excel is essential to using the program efficiently. This class is an introduction to working with Excel formulas & functions, including formula structure, order of operations, copying formulas, relative vs. absolute references, commonly used functions, and troubleshooting formula errors.

Who Should Attend?

This class is for introductory users of Excel who are currently using spreadsheets created by others and want to know more about formulas and functions, or those that use the database features of Excel and want to learn more about calculations. This is a hands-on class with exercises for you to follow along with the instructor. An understanding of basic computer skills such as opening and saving files, basic editing techniques, and navigating the Excel environment is required.

Topics covered include, but not limited to:

  • Basic formulas and the order of operations

Formulas include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The order of operations will be utilized when combining multiple operators into one formula.

  • Functions

Functions are built-in calculations. Excel has hundreds of functions that allow it to calculate everything from the average of numbers to advanced trigonometry and financial calculations. We will cover some of the commonly used functions.

  • Copying formulas

Speed and efficiency in Excel are attained by being able to quickly copy formulas and functions. In this section, we will discuss relative vs. absolute references and when to use each one.

  • Troubleshooting formula errors

Some common formula errors will be discussed and fixed.

About Your Instructor

Rosemary McCracken is a computer trainer with over 25 years of experience in the classroom. She teaches all levels of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio and Outlook. In addition to Microsoft products, she also teaches G Suite, QuickBooks, InDesign, HTML/CSS and WordPress. Rosemary has a B.S. from James Madison University. She is Microsoft Office Expert Certified and is also a Certified Online Training Professional.
