Readers on the Internet are not the same as readers of print. Online readers skim, jump, skip things, and multitask, whereas print readers are more likely to focus on and read a text sequentially. Writing for the new audiences that online media create requires new levels of conciseness and focus.
This class teaches you how to tailor your message to online readers through specific writing techniques, how to structure and format your message for maximum effect, and how to use a scaled approach to deliver more complex material.
Types of media examined include web pages, blogs, e-newsletters, and other electronic forms of communication. During the class we examine current examples of good and bad writing on the Internet and specify how to edit, improve, and ultimately write effectively for these new forms of communication.
During the class you will participate in class discussions, edit and improve text examples, and complete one or more writing assignments. You may choose to use your own current work during exercises, or you may choose to complete editing and writing exercises presented in class.
The class will cover these main topics:
- How Web Writing Differs From Print
- Two Kinds of Web Use
- Two Kinds of Web Writing
- What to Consider Before You Write
- Basics of Good, Clear Writing
- Optimizing Your Writing Style for the Web
- Converting Print Documents to Web Text
- Headlines, Sub-Headlines, and Bullets
Price: $300 per person
